My Review Monday: CoolPencilCase.com

I have some great products to share with you from coolpencilcase.com.

They are a great company who supplies great, fun, affordable stationery items from stylish pencil cases, to cute pen and pencils, and other fun writing utensils. It's not like you're usual office supply store. They have hard to find products available here in the U.S.!

At coolpencilcase.com they believe that "Encouraging your child to practice their writing skills is one of the best gifts a parent can give, and there’s nothing like a cool pencil case full of cool pencils, erasers and accessories to excite their imagination and ignite their creative and linguistic passions!"

As a parent myself, it's great to see a company like this who likes to motivate parents and their children to use products which will motivate them to write and motivate them to be organized.
As a kid, I remember growing up in awe of who had the latest and greatest pencil case. Some were fancy with hidden compartments for paperclips, erasers, or a pencil sharpener. My daughter now has her own cute pencil case which room moms tell me they are amazed at how organized she keeps it. Kids take pride in their belongings. I feel that it helps build their character and confidence. My daughter is very creative and loves to draw and write.
Even moms like me can enjoy these products, which I personally use in my Filofax. This is why cute stationery items are a must, it boost my own creativity and helps me stay organized in my life.
So, head on over now to:

Comparing Check List Stamps for Your Planner - Part. 2

I recently got a hold of the new stamp set from Studiol2e (here) called the List it Set. I wanted to show you the difference between this new set versus the older set called the Plan It Stamp Set. Also, how they both compare to the MUJI check list stamp (here).

These are all stamps I use in my Filofax personal organiser. You can use them with any planner as well.
    Plan It Set
    List It Set
The Studiol2e stamps are made out of a photopolymer clear material. For those of you unfamiliar with clear stamps, you will need an acrylic block to use these stamps.

The acrylic blocks I used in my video are these:
I tested these stamps on Filofax paper from A5 size down to Pocket size pages.

    This test I used VersaFine
Onyx Black Pigment Ink for the Studio l2e stamps
    and
    craftsmart pigment ink - Black
    for the MUJI stamp.

You can use the check list stamps outside of the lines or inside, whichever you preference is.
Use the banner stamp to highlight important events/appointments.

You can see that the MUJI stamp is still slightly smaller than the new Studiol2e stamp, but the Studiol2e has five lines compared to only four with the MUJI stamp.

Read more about my first comparison here!

    Check out my video here!

**Both products were not sponsored by either company and were purchased with my own money.
Everything is 100% my own opinion. **

My busy week does not reflect my planner pages. I have been spending hours and hours on the computer, day after day, continuing my search for a job. Having been unemployed for eight months now, I felt as if I was at a dead end. The countless job applications, being denied, leads ending up no where, not a single job interview, and now unemployment benefits scheduled to end at the end of 2013. I have definitely been feeling the pressure and stress of financial hardships. Which is why I really enjoy what I have been doing with Filofax, blogging, and creating videos. It helps with the stress. Also, I love being able to inspire others to use their planner in a fun way, and share my knowledge about Filofax personal organisers. Unfortunately, it's not what pays the bills and keeps a roof above our heads. People comment and wonder how it is that I can afford to buy Filofax organisers and all these stationery products. First off, I don't think it's anyone's business with what or how I spend my money. Second of all, most of them were either gifts, won from giveaways, or sent as product reviews. In the meantime, I am working on revamping my resume and cover letter and will continue searching and applying for respiratory therapist jobs. Hope you all have a great week!

    My Review: Piaric Inserts

    $

I purchased these inserts by Piaric about a month ago, and have been testing them out since then.
The first set of inserts below are the A5 Week on Two Pages (A01), #1. MNL on white paper.
It is very similar to the format of the Filofax brand inserts. I like having the notes on the top left section of the page as well as even writing spaces for the day of the week. I also like the minimalism of the pages.

Here are the Filofax A5 Week on Two Pages in Multilanguage on white paper as a comparison.
Look at how the each multi-language fills up space. It makes the page look cluttered, and contains some unnecessary information which I do not need. What I do like about these pages is that it tells me which week of the year it is.

The next set of inserts shown here are the A5 Month on Two Pages (A01), #2. MNR on white paper.
I decided to try out having a calendar that has a Monday start and having the weekends together on one page.  Also, being that I am right handed, I opted for the notes section to be on the right hand side.

Here is how I would normally decorate my pages. Below I flipped them over to show if there was any bleed through of the stamps, which showed very minimal shadowing. The crayola marker I used to color in the branches did have some bleed through. I used Pilot Frixion Markers to color in the flowers which showed no bleed through the pages.

Now for the pen test on Piaric To Do inserts on white paper!

I am very impressed with the quality of the paper.
I even tested some fountain pen inks - Pilot Iroshizuku Yama Budo, Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo, and Noodler's Black Ink. Only some slight shadowing showed behind the page. Fountain Pen users will be very happy with these inserts.

Piaric also offeres colored paper inserts.

The colored notepaper are 24 lb or 90 (g/m²)  in purple, pink, ivory, yellow, green, and blue.
The white papers are 28 lb or 100 (g/m²).

These inserts come in a variety of sizes from A5, Personal, Pocket, Mini, and other planner which accommodate 5.5" x 8.5" size refills.

There are a wide range of diary inserts as well as notepaper which are available.
If you need a special insert that is not currently available on the website, contact Piaric!

I'm so excited to share this exciting event with you!
Are you looking for a way to stay organized for the upcoming year?

Well, I have been working with Vroman’s Bookstore, which is the oldest and largest independent bookstore in Southern California, and a well known Filofax retailer. Come meet with me as I will be giving a brief overview of the Filofax system, sizes, colors, ranges, accessories, and how to utilize the Filofax personal organiser to their greatest potential and have fun doing it! I will be joined with 4 other Filofax users to demonstrate different Filofax techniques and share their experiences.

We encourage all people to go, even if you do not have a Filofax, or are contemplating about owning one, even if you have a planner but not a Filofax. It would be great to show that there is already a large Filofax community out there. Therefore, we encourage everyone to bring your own Filofax Personal Organisers and/or planners. Hopefully we can all get a chance to share them with each other especially for those who have never seen certain styles, colors, sizes, etc. It will be a great opportunity for those who already own a Filofax to share with others their love for Filofax and/or planners. Vroman's  will have their Filofax collection present for you to shop through and explore, as well as spot light the new styles that have gained tremendous interest with their recent release in 2013. I will be bringing my own personal collection as well!

This event will require an RSVP(626-449-5320) as to how many attendees will be joining us for this fun filled afternoon!

    When:  January 11th, 2014 at 1:30pm

    My Craft Room Tour 2013

Last month I decided to do some re-arranging/ re-decorating in my office space.
I was unhappy with the way my desk was facing because when I would film videos, my back was towards the light, so I wanted to get better lighting with my photos and video. I also was annoyed with having the computer in my crafting space. I first thought about getting another desk to attach to the existing Ikea Expedit unit. I really can't afford to buy another desk, so I had to think of another solution.

Let's see how this room has evolved through the years.
Here is what the room looked like when the house was being built back in 2009.

Here is how it was set up when we moved in!

The next year, I moved the desk and made it more "purpley" by changing all my binders to purple and adding some purple cardstock behind the bins of my Expedit unit.
Then, the year after that, I decided that I wanted to move the desk again because my chair kept hitting the side of the other desk. So, I moved the desk back side by side with the other desk.

Now, here is a part of the mess I made.

Now, here is the the finished room. This is what it looks like as you enter the room.

My Filofax Collection is overflowing into a third cubby now! I used to barely fill one!

     My crafty area

Now if that wasn't enough change...
I decided to make another dramatic change to one wall.

I think this should do it for now.

Here are some of the items mentioned:
    IKEA Hemnes Glass Door Cabinet
IKEA Expedit Shelving Unit 4x4 White
    IKEA Lekman Box
    ITSO Storage Cubes
    ITSO Fabric Storage Bins
    Sterilite Latching Boxes - Plum
    Sterilite Clip Boxes - Green

    My Filofax Week #50

Another hectic week. I have really been feeling the pressure this week trying to fix my job situation. Unfortunately my unemployment benefits have run out, so my husband and I have really been stressed out lately. Even more so with Christmas just around the corner. I'm trying to stay positive and just believe that things will come around for us. I am just hoping it is sooner rather than later.
On a lighter note, I am getting very excited prepping for this Filofax event coming up in January. I can't wait to meet more people in the Filofax community, being able to put faces to names, as well as seeing others I have met before. Also, hoping to get the chance to get people into the planner community.
I am so happy to see the response the event has gotten this past week.
I have also been practicing one of my other favorite hobbies, Calligraphy. I am hoping that once I feel more confident, I can possibly give you more information on how to get started, as many of you have expressed your interest in how I do this. As you can see below, I have incorporated my calligraphy style into my planner pages. I also used a fountain pen. I love writing with a fountain pen, the problem is, that Filofax paper doesn't like it. Even with Filofax Cotton Cream paper, fountain pen inks do not work.
Since I have been so impressed by the quality of Piaric's inserts, I decided to give it a go. I can say with confidence that there is NO BLEED THROUGH what so ever! Only very minimal shadowing. I was using a Fountain Pen Revolution (FPR) Dilli - Flex Nib pen, and found that it was too wet. I was afraid it would soak through the pages, but it didn't. I switched over to a Noodler's Ahab Flex Nib pen, which has a finer nib than the FPR, and it worked out better for me. If you want to use fountain pens with your Filofax, you will need to print out your own inserts with a better quality paper, such as Clairefontaine/Rhodia. Also, paper that tends to be fountain pen friendly are 85 g/m2 or greater (24 lb weight or greater).

Washi Wednesday #5 - Washi Tape Light Switch

    $

While browsing the photos on my friend, Kristal's, Instagram, I saw a picture that I knew would be perfect to share for this Washi Wednesday. It was perfect timing as I had just painted my craft room walls purple. So, why not at a craft touch by adding washi tape to my light switch plates. It's a great way to add some color to those boring white switch plates, also you can do this to match the decor in your room.

    What you'll need:
    • Lights witch plate
    • Rubbing alcohol
    • Cotton ball
    • Washi tapes
    • Craft knife
    • Scissors
    Optional:
     Directions:

Start off by removing the desired light switch plate from the wall by unscrewing the screws used to hold it in place. Then, clean off any residue on the light swtich plate by applying some rubbing alcohol to a cotton ball and rubbing off any dirt or oils that may be on it.

Next, place a strip of washi tape starting on one corner, and laying it across the switch plate at an angle. Continue to line up strips of washi tape next to each other until switch plate is covered.

Flip plate over and use scissors to trim tape from the edges, leaving enough tape to wrap around the edges onto the back. Trim out the hole for the switch using a craft knife, by cuting an X shape in the rectangular hole. Fold excess tape up and over the edges of the opening. Use a craft knife to poke through the screw holes. Lastly, screw your light switch plate back onto the wall.

    Optional:
Give the switch plate a light coat of Mod Podge Satin applied with a foam brush in the direction of the tape. Allow to dry completely before re-installing over your light switch.
This will help to protect it from dirty and greasy hands.

    My Filofax Week #51

This week I tried to really enjoy my family time. Sometimes doing these things makes me feel like I'm going on a mini vacation. On Wednesday, we went to watch "Disney on Ice - Rockin' Ever After" at the Honda Center, in Anaheim, CA. My oldest daughter has a very long winter break, since last Thanksgiving November 22 until Jan. 13, 2014. So, it can be very difficult at times to keep her entertained. The last time I saw Disney on Ice was ages ago, probably when I was around her age. It was nice to see it again, but this time as a parent. It was also very gracious for my mother -in-law to purchase the tickets so that we could all go as a family. We also had been given tickets to the Disneyland Theme Park. It was a great day to go. Skies were clear due to the rainfall from the day before. Weather was nice, a bit chilly, but still sunny and bright. I love Disneyland in the Winter time, when all the holiday decorations are up. Everything looks like it's covered in snow. Even the castle and certain attractions are a special holiday theme.  We didn't get to stay long enough for the firework spectacular but we managed to experience the magic of snow! Yes, it snows in Disneyland! Something you definitely have to experience if you ever get the chance to visit during the wintertime. Although going to a theme park with kids can get pretty stressful, with meltdowns, and impatiently waiting in long lines. Seeing the joys on their faces when they get to meet their favorite characters, going on rides together, and experiencing the snow, just makes it feel worthwhile. That feeling of accomplishment as a parent, making your children feel happy and loved. I am very thankful to those who have helped us make it possible to give our children good childhood experiences despite our financial situation at the moment.
I ended the week with shopping at one of my favorite stores - Target. Get 10% off your entire in-store purchase on Dec. 21 and Dec. 22 at Target stores due to the unauthorized access to payment card data in U.S. Stores. You can read more about this here: Important message from CEO
Combine this with Manufacturer's coupons, Target coupons, Target Cartwheel app, and 5% off using your Target RED card and you've got major savings! I managed to get a pack of 24 rolls of Angel Soft Toilet paper for $4 and some change versus $9+. Let's just say, I think we should have enough toilet paper to last us for a while.

    with the Wine/Plum Osterley
Left: Purple Malden, Right: The Original in Patent purple

When first released, retail price for one of these was £495 which is close to about $810 USD. I honestly didn't care for it especially with that price tag! It didn't appeal to me at all.

Someone had even asked me if I had done a review for it as there aren't too many reviews about it and here is what I initially said, "In my opinion, it does not look attractive to me. Also, not very functional or practical. There are not enough pockets. There's an extra flap of leather to "protect" the dividers which I think will add too much bulk, imagine adding coins to the back pocket. The inserts are terrible. The diary being a week on one page multi-language hardly has any writing room. Not to mention that it's way,way over priced. Not worth it for me. This was not a very popular Filofax, which is why no one has done any real reviews/videos on it. This one is definitely not on my wishlist." -March 2013

Then, in May 2013, I saw it again on the blog of Janet Carr HERE: thisbugslife.com and I thought it looked great! There was something about it that I was interested in seeing, which was it's ice gold rings. I never saw a Filofax with gold rings before. Plus, it's a purple/ violet colored Filofax. How could I pass it up?

This month, I was able to find a fellow Filofax friend who sold me hers for a reasonable price. I had to grab it, and I'm glad I did. I thought the material would  feel very bulky, but it is surprisingly not. The color is wonderful. I imagined it to have a brownish/purple colors, but it was more purpley than I thought. The ice gold rings are the highlight of this Filofax. It gives it such a beautiful touch. I would love take this out on its own without my purse/handbag, because of its gorgeousness. It has a similar color to the Plum/Wine Osterley but more on the purple side. If the Purple Malden and the Plum Osterley had a baby, you would get the Violet Temperley. I mainly use this organiser as my wallet. You can also read how Janet also uses this as here wallet here: http://thisbugslife.com. This organiser is still available on the Filofax UK website.

This will be my last "my week" blog post 2013. If you have been following me for a while, then you will know that this year, I have been going through some personal issues. Being unemployed for the past 9 months has been really depressing for me. This month in particular has been the worst I haven't ever felt in my life, this nonstop feeling of being rushed. I have found myself caught in the grip of mental stresses of doubt, expectations, social comparison, anger, disappointment, blame, resentment, and fear. I loved making videos for you all. Creating my blog, and YouTube was meant to help relieve my stress, but even that has now been overwhelmed for me. I don't think it is fair for all my followers that I was being inconsistent, which I felt I was. I wasn't following my scheduling, and wasn't posting as much as I wanted to. I was feeling this way for a while now, but I wanted to finish 2013. I have much bigger problems that I need to face and put more attention to. I feel that I need time to recollect myself and have some time for reflection. I'm trying to regain my positive thinking and just be thankful for what I do have.

I thank you for your unconditional support throughout the year. For all your messages of encouragement and praise. Thanks to all of you who continue to mention me in your videos or blogs. I appreciate the credit and the recognition. Thank you for your feedback and criticism. It has helped develop My Purpley Life into what it has become.

    Filofax Extravaganza at Vroman's Bookstore - January 11, 2014

This wonderful event was held on January 11, 2014 in Pasadena, California at Vroman’s Bookstore, which is the oldest and largest independent bookstore in Southern California, and a well known Filofax retailer.

Vroman's Bookstore is located at 695 East Colorado Boulevard Pasadena, CA 91101
    vromansbookstore.com

We had over 60 people in attendance.

Vroman's was kind enough to offer everyone in attendance some snacks as well as decorate their tables with purple table cloths. They also offered purple chocolate Hershey's kisses! It made me feel right at home!

On the tables up front, I placed some organisers from my own collection as well as my cousin's, and from the stock at Vroman's bookstore.

First, I did a brief introduction of who I am and what the event is about. Then, I went on to do a very brief overview of the Filofax system since most people there were already familiar with a ring bound planner and/or Filofax.  I covered a few facts about Filofax the company. As well as what Filofax personal organiser can be used for.

Next, I did an introduction of the different sizes from Mini right up to A5. As well as some leather and non-leather types of organisers.

Then, I talked a little about the many different types of inserts and refills. ( Day per page, Week per page, Week on two pages, Monthly, Yearly ) showing the different types on screen.

I was joined with 4 other Filofax friends of mine who I asked to demonstrate different Filofax techniques and share their experiences with their Filofax personal organiser/s.

Rebecca Moore Bover shared with us her role as an admin for one of our Filofax groups on Facebook called FiloRAKs ---> Found here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/filorak/
She also gave us a glimpse inside her Gillio organiser. You can watch her on YouTube as well: http://www.youtube.com/user/SecretAgentBover

Here, I explained how to utilize the Filofax planners with style by decorating planner pages with washi tape, stickers, and various other types of stationery products. As well as, where I purchase products to make my planner fun and enjoyable such as Daiso, Target dollar spot, Michael's craft stores, Hobby Lobby, JoAnn's, Staples, and other various office supply stores. I also showed some products which Vroman's bookstore has in stock as well.

Then, Karen Massie shares her Vintage Snake Filofax as well as her system with an A5 Purple Malden incorporating her personal, work, teaching, and doctoral studies into that planner!

I also heard from Wendy Van Camp, who is the writer behind No Wasted Ink. She explains her use of her Personal Crimson Malden Filofax for her artisan jewelry business as well as other projects she is working on.

Then, I did a live demonstration on how I decorate my pages and explained the system I use to plan with my Personal Teal Baroque Filofax.

My last speaker was Karine Tovmassian sharing her thoughts on the science behind analogue planners and creating a life blueprint through a modular system. She talks about modularlization of our lives and how to break out important chunks of life to inventory and track them as opposed to how to plan in your Filofax. Eventually, it's becomes a blueprint for one's life. You can then create tabs out of these chunks. You can read more about her work here---> www.ThinkerExtraordinaire.com

Then, I finished off by mentioning my social media outlets, my Blog,  some other important websites to note Philofaxy.com, Filofaxusa.com, and Filofax.co.uk.

Lastly, we raffled off quite a few prizes!!!

Some items were donated from FilofaxUSA and brought from their representative who attened the event as well. A few of the items were a Pocket Apex, a Pocket Ruby Deco, a Mini Aqua Chameleon, which also included some Filofax inserts and refills. I also provided up for raffle some Daiso stationery products, and a MUJI checklist stamp. The Filofax representative mentioned that the new product catalog will be out by June 2014.

The event ended with a meet and greet with some of my loyal followers and members from the Philofaxy and Facebook groups.  I did ask that we move the meet and greet downstairs, but by the time I got downstairs not too many people were left. This was a long (2 hour) event and unfortunately there wasn't enough time for everyone to chit chat and meet everyone, and share eachother's organisers, or make a Filofax tower. Nonetheless, it was a great turn out. I appreciate everyone who stopped by and spent their afternoon with us!

I would like to thank Vroman's Bookstore for hosting this great event, for having me and allowing us to gather in their wonderful store.  A very special thanks to their Pen and Stationery Department Manager, Corie Hiroto, their Assistant Manager, Cara Escobedo, and all the staff who helped out with our event. Again, thank you to FilofaxUSA and FilofaxUK for their collaboration and help to make this event successful. Last but not least, a special thanks to my brother and sister in-law fortaking and providing these wonderful photographs of the event! Contact them at http://www.lightandlens.com/

I hope to be able to do another event like this in the future.
    It was tons of fun!

Month in Review - January 2014

It has been a while since my last post. I know you have been dying to see what I have been up to. If you don't keep up with me through YouTube, and my other social media outlets then you have been missing out. I have been doing daily vlogs, where I film bits and pieces throughout the day, as well as some chit chat about things I am going through currently. So, if you haven't checked those out, please do! I have also done a video about my planner set-up for 2014.

But before I talk about planner stuff, I wanted to say a big thank you to everyone for their well wishes and words of support throughout my hiatus. I am truly touched by the amount of people who are genuinely concerned for me and my well being. I am very grateful  that I have such a great connection with all my followers and even with the companies with which I am affiliated with. I appreciate your patience, and hope to continue to share my life with you.

With that being said, let talk planners people! Kicking off the new year with some new organisers which I acquired recently. First, the one that I am currently using, the Personal Ochre Malden Filofax, I have really been enjoying. I honestly thought I would never get this color, just because I have never been a big fan of brown leathers. When I found out that according to Chinese zodiac 2014 is the Year of the Wood Horse. It starts on January 31, 2014. Since, wood is an earth element, I knew I had to get the Ochre Malden. In Chinese astrology, the Horse year is considered a fortunate year that brings luck and good things. Hopefully, by following feng shui tips such as keeping earth elements around me, including my trusty Filofax which I use on an everyday basis, will help bring me fortune and luck! Read more here: New Year Lucky Color
Since my birth element is wood, the best colors for me this year are earthy tones such as green, brown, blue, and black.

Some other organisers I plan on using include my Personal Teal Baroque Filofax, my Slimline Black Holborn Filofax and Compact Brown Holborn as my wallet. For the month of February, I plan on moving into my new Mint Green kikki-k Time Planner purchased all the way from Australia! Found here: www.kikki-k.com

The medium size shown here is comparable to a Personal size Filofax.

Now without further a do, here are my decorated pages for the month of January! I am using inserts which I printed, cut, and punched myself. Printable is available from phILOFAXY.com
Also, most of the pens I used this month are available for purchase at JetPens.com
    Enjoy!

Just wanted to share with you all a few cards that I've made for some special birthday girls!

This particular card was made using C.C. Designs Stamp in Butterfly Lucy.
The image was then colored in with Copic markers. I used the paper pad from MME Dolled Up 6x6 pad to create this 6x6 card.

I've been incorporating some new elements such as embossing and calligraphy into my card making.

Thanks for stopping by to see my creations!

My Review: Morning Glory Pocket Color Pen - Twin Type

I posted this photos recently on my Instagram and have gotten some interest for the pen I used in these photographs. I thought I would share my thoughts on this pen for those of you who are unfamiliar with it.

I purchased these pens from Morning Glory. There are some Morning Glory stores all over Southern California which carries these pens. It is also available on their online store: Morning Glory / Online Store.

The specific pens I am reviewing are the Pocket Color Pen - Twin Type. It has water soluble ink. It can also double as a highlighter. This pen needs to have its cap closed after use or it will dry out quickly. Directions state to listen carefully  for the "Click" sound when you close the cap. One side of the nib is a  fine line (Pen Type: 0.3-0.4mm) and other side nib is a  thick line (Highlighter Type: 3.0mm).

There are eighteen (18) different colors! Colors are:
    01. Red,
    02. Pink,
    03. Cherry Pink,
    04. Lovely Pink,
    05. Rose Pink,
    06. Peach Pink,
    07. Coco Beige, *(shown in photo)
    08. Gold Yellow,
    09. Yellow,
    10. Lime Yellow,
    11. Melon Green, *(shown in photo)
    12. Emerald Green, *(shown in photo)
    13. Aqua Blue, *(shown in photo)
    14. Blue,
    15. Ocean Blue,
    16. French Blue,
    17. Lilac,
    18. Black *(shown in photo)

This pen also available without the thick nib : Pocket Color Pen - Single Type.

Here is my test on Filofax paper:

First was Filofax Cotton Cream paper

    Next, was Filofax White paper

I also, tested them on Piaric inserts which are 28 lb or 100 (g/m²).

Overall impressions: I think these pens are great. The fine point is more like a fineliner marker than a pen. Main reasons why I wanted to try these out were because of their colors, I don't know of any other maker/pen with the colors I chose. I love that it can double as a highlighter. I have tried the Lilac, Aqua, and Coco Beige as a highlighter on Filofax Graph /Quadrille white paper and saw very minimal shadowing. I will do a separate post on highlighters soon. There are no problems fitting into pen loops.
I would definitely recommend trying these pens out.

My 2014 Monthly Calendar Set Up in my Filofax

When using my Filofax Personal Organiser, I use a monthly calender in conjuction with a weekly calendar.
I find it easy to see an overview of what events I need to keep in mind within that month as well as give me a place where I can plan things months, days, or weeks ahead of time instead of scrambling through my weekly pages. Seeing an overview of the month gives me a way to visualize if it is going to be a hectic month so that I can prepare myself mentally.

These inserts are templates created by Susan Conder. They are available on her blog: quietfeather.blogspot.com It is available only in A5  size. I added in the dates, days, and month myself.
I loved this layout due to the big boxes which allows me to add some stickers and write in multiple events. I also like the how the side has a notes box which doesn't impede on the space for the calendar. I've added some cute owl calendar stickers on the right hand side to give me a quick view to the month previous and the month ahead.

I use a color coding system. I don't necessarily use washi tape to color code, but it is great when I have to use it for events that are more than a couple days long. As you can see along the bottom of the page, I used a strip of pink, which signifies my oldest daughter, she will be going on spring break, so I used washi tape to mark those days. Cathy Vee has a great system she uses with washi tape on her blog: insidethecraftersstudio.com I needed some sort of reminder of what colors I use for my color coding. So, I made a page marker out of cardstock, and used washi tape as my color guide. I hole punched it and added some colorful hole reinforcement and cut slits so that it is easily removable when I need it to be.

The tools I use for color coding are:

Pilot FrXion Erasable Pens - 0.5mm which I love to use because of the ability to erase things as they change.
If you do not want to use erasable pens you can also use Pilot Hi-Tec-C Coleto Pens which come in
0.3, 0.4 and .05 mm points. Since it is a multi pen, you can carry around multiple colors without carrying many pens. These also come in a 5, 4, or 3 barrel size.
    Available at JetPens.com

I also highlight the days that need attention by simply drawing the box with the coordinating color using markers such as:
these Pilot FriXion Erasable Markers, again it gives me the ability to erase if needed be.

Non erasable options which offer a wide array of colors are:
Stabilo Point 88 fineliner markers 0.4mm
    Staedtler Triplus Fineliners 0.3mm
Pentel Arts Color Pen - Fine Point Color Markers

Some other options of color coding I love using are transparent colored stickers:
You have the ability to customize them with whatever you choose. I labeled things like trash day, no school, birthday, dentist, doctor, etc.
are also great for color coding. I like to use the words from the Studio l2e "List It" Stamp Set
or the Studio l2e "Plan It" Stamp Set and stamp it onto the labels.
Transparent stickers can be found at Mochithings.com and Daiso Stores.
Many others can be found on Etsy.com and on eBay by searching "Transparent Diary Sticker" or "diary sticker calendar"
