Month in Review - February 2014

I did a couple videos last month with regards to my planning system. If you are new to my blog, you will find weekly posts on how I used to decorate my planner pages. This year, I have been focusing more on how I actually use my planner. There has been some confusion as to how can I possibly plan on pages that are so heavily decorated with stickers, washi tape, different colour pens, different types of pens and stamps, and other things. I want to focus on how it is possible use an orgainser in a creative yet functional and effective manner.

If you haven't checked those videos out, please do so here:

and here:

Last month, I used my Mint Green kikki - K Medium Time Planner which is now a discontinued model, as my every day carry (EDC). I used The Original A5 Patent Purple Filofax as my Home Management planner. I also used the Black Slimline Holborn Filofax as my wallet, which has been working out really well for me.

I continued to use the inserts which I printed out myself from Philofaxy. I also started using inserts from www.joykanani.com. Kanani, the owner and creator of Studiol2e created this day per page (DPP) diary layout printable with is available for free on her website. What I loved about these inserts was that the To Do section has been sized so you can use the checkboxes from the List It and/or Plan It stamp sets as well as the individual sentiments. These inserts are available for Personal size Filofax planners only. She also included some inserts without the day of the week at the top so you can use it for any day and even use it as an insert between your Week on 2 Pages as I have done in the photos below.

 Week 6

 Week 7

 Week 8 ---> into March

I have also been using these pages from www.passionplanner.com  for my week on two pages. This is a free trial printable of the Passion Planner, which I resized to fit into my A5 Filofax as shown above. I basically set my printer to print in A5 size paper which I had already cut down from Letter size paper. I set the margins accordingly so that I would have space on the sides for the holes of the rings.

Content Features for the FREE version

  • weekly appointment calendars that run from January 2014 - December 2014
  • two prioritized to-do lists (one for personal and one for work)
  • designated section for daily focus goals
  • a weekly "good things that happened" log
  • blank space to tailor the journal to your needs (draw, journal, take notes, etc.)

For March, I plan on sticking to these pages for my weekly planning instead of the Personal size printables I made from Philofaxy. I will be using Joy Kanani's Day Per Page layout in my Personal sized organiser. Here is a preview of my set-up for March which will include colors of Mint Green, Coral, Peach, and Navy Blue.

Hope you all have a fantastic month ahead!

My Review Monday: Charleston Filofax

First introduced in August 2013

"Luxurious buffalo leather with a rich varied grain, elegantly styled on a 1920s heritage look."
-Filofax UK

Filofax Purple Compact Charleston

Sizes: Pocket, Compact, A5
Color/s:  (3) Purple, Red, Brown
Material:
Material Exterior: full grain aniline finish buffalo leather
Material Interior: exterior leather and polyester lightly corded lining - colour matched to leather
Ring Sizes:
Pocket:  15mm
Compact: 15mm
A5:  25mm

 Design Features:

Left Hand Details: six card pockets, one vertical slip pocket
Right Hand Details: two pockets, one vertical slip pocket
Diary Type: week on two pages English 12 month diary - cotton cream
Features: please note: due to the unique nature of buffalo leather, the grain will vary from piece to piece - please see the image showing the variance.
Closure Detail: round leather strap with small gold stud popper closure
Pen Loop: one colour matched elastic pen loop

The Charleston range from Filofax is inspired by the glamour of the Great Gatsby era and the Roaring 20's.
You can imagine how excited I am when Filofax releases purple colored organisers. When this organiser was first released, I was under the impression that the entire ring mechanism would be in gold. Another thing that I was not to fond of, was the interior having that polyester lining which I think took away from the luxurious feel to the organiser. I think it would have been better if it had the leather all throughout. When I first saw the organiser in hand, I was also surprised by the color. The color of the purple appears very dark, and unless in sunlight, you may not recognize the color of it. It does come across as dark blue, dark grey, or even black.
I do like the interior layout. It has a good amount of card slots which holds six cards in front, and two in the back. Since I use this as a wallet, I am able to hold a total of 8 credit card holders. In total, I carry over 48 cards as well as some cash. There is no pocket for change/coins. You can certainly fit a zipped pocket envelope and carry it that way if you don't carry as many cards as I do.
This model is has a very similar characteristics of the Calipso and Holborn ranges. Just like the Malden range, the leather of the Charleston will vary between different organisers.
Although it has an elastic pen loop, I feel that it is necessary to carry a slim pen, due to the short strap.
I do enjoy using this organiser as a wallet. This organiser is still available on the Filofax UK website

Personal - £30.00 =$50 USD

My Impressions:
In my hands, it feels very lightweight. Sometimes patent leather can feel like plastic, this does not. The material feels thin. As you can see in the photo above, I noticed that due to my long nails, I was leaving indentations on the closure strap. It is very faint, and unless you are really looking at the details, you won't notice them. Although, this could be a nuisance if you tend to throw your organiser into your bag or purse. It may be prone to these types of indentations. I tried to rub them out with my fingers, but not sure if that made any difference. The color is very similar to that of the Filofax Metropol Range.

The style is also similar to that of the Saffiano Range. Same style strap, and similar internal layout design.

As with most compact sized organisers, I love using this particular size as a wallet. It is great as a planner as well, nice and lightweight compared to a personal sized organiser. If you are unfamiliar with the sizing of these organisers, please refer to my post here: How to choose a Filofax personal organiser.
*The Compact sized organisers use the same size paper as the Personal size. *
l I think the color selection of this range is perfect for springtime. It has been a while since Filofax came out with pretty pastel colors such as lemon, duck egg blue, and lavender. This organiser is due to be released on the Filofax USA website around Mid-late April 2014. If you can't wait until then, it is available for order on the Filofax UK website.
**Please note the special promotion going on which was mentioned at the top of the page.

My Review: Kuretake Zig Wink of Stella Markers

Kuretake Zig Wink of Stella Markers

These can be purchased individually or in this 12 color set. There is also an option to purchase a 6 color set.
Colors not included in this 12 color set are: Red, Dark Green, and Orange.

Like a romantic wink that will make your heart flutter, Wink of Stella is an excellent pen with glitter dust perfect for all your cards, letters, journals and scrapbooking needs.
The pen writes in a 0.8 mm point line. Here is my writing sample in my Leuchtturm 1917 Notebook which has 80 gsm weight paper. Some glitter pens, and glitter glues tend to clog up when used. Not as issue with these markers, they write nice and smooth.

These markers add that touch of shimmer to any project. It  has the same type of shimmer which the Kuretake Zig Wink of Stella Glitter Brush Pen has. If you need something with a little more precision than a brush, then this is a great option.

Pricing:

My impressions:
How great is it to put a touch of sparkle to any piece of paper without having to use glitter glue, or glitter gel pens, or embossing methods. It saves you time with quick drying times. These markers have vibrant colors. They write smoothly compared to some gel pens which can get clogged and feel rough when used. Although, because there is no adhesive, the sparkle can fade or rub away.

These markers are available for purchase through JetPens.com

Month in Review - March 2014

The month of March was definitely a busy month of planning. I honestly don't know how I could be able to keep track of things without my paper planner. Just like some of you, I have tried using a digital device for managing my time. It was the lack of customization which drew me away from it. I didn't suit my needs like a paper planner does. With a paper planner, I am able to use a variety of inserts to effectively manage all aspects of my life - my two children, my husband, and myself. Before I was using a paper planner, I had post-it notes all over the place. Having notes on my digital device simply didn't work because I would flipping through apps trying to get the information I needed. It was much more easier to just flip to a tabbed section in my planner. It seemed more difficult trying to organize things in a digital device versus just grabbing a pen in different colors to color code what I needed to. I don't have to worry about my planner running out of battery when I get to the grocery store. "What was on that list again?"
I've also mentioned before that being a paper crafter, using a paper planner allows me to be creative with my planning system, with the use of stamps, stickers, washi tape, etc. This is just what works for me. I am not saying that one system is better than the other. It is my preference to strictly use a paper planner. Not to mention carrying around these beautiful organisers with designs or wrapped in gorgeous leather is quite appealing, and it helps me stay organized!

I greatly enjoyed using my kikki-K Time Planner in the Medium size for the first few weeks. I do feel as though it is not as stuff-able as some of my other organisers. I also much more prefer using a planner with a strap and popper closure versus the elastic band. I, then, moved on to a planner that has been on my wishlist for years now. I never bit the bullet and purchased one for ridiculous prices on eBay. I knew that if I waited, my time would come to own one. I am now a proud owner of a Personal Black Baroque Filofax.
*Warning: some drooling may occur!!!

I am very lucky to own not one, but two!
Someone asked how does one who owns several organisers decide which one to use and when.
I like to think of it like shoes, or purses. It depends on what color I feel like using. I told myself that this year, I would try to stick to colors which were of the "Year of the Horse" - natural, earthy tones - such as Green, Teal, Brown, Black, Blue. I am sponsored by companies which send me products to review. So, for now I am currently testing out some of the new Spring organisers by Filofax. So, sometimes I don't decide what I want to use simply because I do so many reviews on different types of products. Some people like to collect things, such as fountain pens, baseball cards, purses, china, cosmetics, or shoes. There are a number of people, who are like me, that collect organisers/planners/notebooks. I own so many because I am either gifted them, or have been sent them for review. It is important that you understand that I do many comparisons between ranges, so it is also important for me to have this type of variety for me to do so.
I am very thankful that I am able to do what I do, and showcase these wonderful products.

I continued to use these printable Day Per Page inserts from www.joykanani.com
and stuck with them for the entire month. I also used a week on two pages from  www.passionplanner.com
I ended up not really using them as much as I thought I would because I felt I was just duplicating information. I felt that I could just plan with a month on two pages and be more detailed with my day. If I needed to plan ahead, whether it be within the week, or next week. I simply went back to my month at a glance and managed my time that way.

Here is a glance at some of my planner pages for the month, keeping with my color theme of mint green, coral, peach, and navy blue.

I did mention on my Facebook page that I was planning on starting up my well known decoration videos, but unfortunately there has been a change in plans. We have decided to sell our house. It was a very difficult decision to make, but it is in our best interest at the moment. Many of you are well aware of how stressful moving can be, so I hope you will understand. I do hope to come back to it at some point once we've settled into a new place. Sadly, I will be losing my beautiful purpley craft room/office. I am grateful for all your well wishes and prayers you have sent to me and my family during this difficult time. As long as we are together, we will get through it. Thank you.

My Impressions:

Upon reading about the release of this organiser, I was really intrigued by it's beautiful pattern. I immediately thought it would be similar to the style of the Lavender Metropol Filofax. As you can see in the photo below, the square shaped strap detail and the style of the stitching on the edges. Another thing I noticed is that the material seems to feel thin, but this could be good thing as it is not stiff as some other binders. This lays nice and flat, even without inserts.

 Left: Lavender Metropol, Right: Willow

The material feels different from any other Filofax I have seen. It feels similar to a Paperchase Butterfly Organiser that I have. Unlike the Metropol which has that vinyl/plastic feel to it, this material feels matte, and almost velvety.  Another difference is that the Metropol has two pen loops which are not elasticized.

The internal layout is also similar. This makes for a very functional design, loads of card slots, a full length pocket and a pocket in the back for an option to place a notepad. The Willow also has a very generous strap, which is great for those of us who like to stuff our planners.
One thing that I did not like about this organiser is that there was wrinkling in the strap. I not sure if other organisers are like this, of if it was just the one I received. But, if you look at the back of the organiser, the strap is attached into the back cover unlike most organisers where the strap is attached onto the back. It could also possibly be since the material is thin, the popper imbedded inside is creating that wrinkling. It is not a huge issue, just something I noticed. It has no affect to the use of the organiser. The colors chosen for this organiser is very appropriate for it's springtime release. The contrast of the light pink interior is a nice choice for this heavily patterned cover. Although, I would have preferred it to be purple of course. For now, this organiser is will not be released on the Filofax USA website, but there is a possibility it may be introduce later on. It is now currently available for order on the Filofax UK website.

**FOR A LIMITED TIME ONLY to celebrate the launch of our newest products we are giving you FREE UK standard delivery on spring launches. Month in Review - May 2014

I know it's almost the end of the month, but it is time I got caught up with things. So, better late than never! Here is my review of the organisers I used for the month of May.

One thing that never changes is that I use a Compact size Filofax as my wallet. During the month of May, I was given the opportunity to do a product review on the Patent Lavender Compact Filofax. I am happy to see that it has been holding up pretty well. I was afraid of it being scratched and dinged up at first, but I have come to a realization that it won't stay perfect forever. It is build to withstand usage of daily life. Some days, such as a quick run to the groceries, or the post office, it is nice and easy to carry. Why I chose to use a compact over a pocket size is due to the fact that I carry many cards with me. I use over 48 cards ranging from rewards cards, stamp cards, and medical cards. I do not keep any diary inserts, just cash and 8 credit/business card holders. I carry my coins in a separate pouch. This is how it looks like.

In the front pocket, I keep some credit/debit cards, some cash, and some note paper. In the back pocket, I carry larger rewards cards that don't fit into the business card holders, and some stamps.

If you are wondering what the top labels are, I have DRINKS: which is mainly restaurants & food/drink shops. Next, is STATIONERY: rewards cards for my craft stores and office supply stores. Lastly, MEDICAL: medical insurance cards, prescriptions, medical licenses/certificates.

Next, I will share my A5 Raspberry Saffiano. This organiser is definitely a workhorse. It holds up very well. It is durable, and has a large capacity. I use this organiser mainly for managing events an appointments with my monthly calendar. Please watch my video on YouTube as to how I use my monthly calendar here: My 2014 Monthly Calendar Set Up  if you are interested about that.

Lastly, I also use a Personal size Filofax for my everday use. This organiser serves as my task manager and holds important information that I may need on a daily basis. I use a week on two pages printable which I personaized from Philofaxy.com. I have received many requests to do a video on how I print my inserts. I personally think that it would difficult to do because everyone has different computers and printers, so what may work for me may not work for you. This is something I will try to work on in the future, but not anytime soon. There are some great videos here: Philofaxy: Diary Inserts if you are having some trouble.

I used the beautiful Personal size Orchid Aston Filofax.
Below are my decorated pages for the month of May as well as the supplies used. I will list the products below each photograph.

My Review: Pilot Juice Gel Ink Pens

$

I finally had the chance to try out these pens courtesy of JetPens back at the beginning of the year and I couldn't wait to grab more colors. The colors I now have are:
  • 0.5mm Gray
  • 0.7mm Coral Pink
  • 0.5mm Pastel Green
  • 0.5mm Turquiose Green
  • 0.5mm Grape
  • 0.5mm Pastel Violet
I was interested in this pen when a follower of mine asked if I knew any affordable pens that had grey ink. Of course, I hopped onto JetPens to see what I could find. After getting my hands on these Pilot Juice gel ink pens, I immediately felt a similar writing experience with the Pilot Frixion pen. Of course, they are both made by Pilot. Even the tips of the pen are similar. I tried both the 0.5mm and 0.7mm in the Pilot Juice and Pilot Frixion which I felt wrote the same. The only difference is aesthetics and the fact that one is erasable (Pilot Frixion) while the other is not.

This is both pens in the 0.7mm point. As you can see below, the tips are practically identical.
Above you will see the swatches of ink which I tested on Filofax white paper. There appears to be some minimal shadowing/ghosting of the ink on the back side of the paper, but no actual bleed through of the ink. This is because the ink of the pen is pigment-based ink, which means that it is water-resistant and fade-resistant. This is good if you are looking for a pen that has "Archival Quality". This is another reason why I recommend this pen. It has been reported that those who have used the Pilot Frixion pens have experienced their writing to disappear if left in someplace hot such as a hot vehicle. This is due to the thermo sensitive nature of the Pilot Frixion ink.

Interestingly enough, the ink in these pens will actually reappear when the temperature reaches below – 10 C (under 14 Fahrenheit). A freezer is sufficiently cold enough to make the ink start to reappear. (-JetPens)

If you love how the Pilot Frixion pens write, the Pilot Juice pens are a great alternative. These pens write smoothly and have a large variety of colors - 36 to be exact! These pens are very affordable at $1.65 (USD) from JetPens. They are also available in a bundle set of 6, 12, 24, or 36. These pens come in three different sizes, from 0.38mm, 0.5mm and 0.7mm.

It was a bit difficult seeing the Pastel colors on regular paper, so above you can see how the ink writes on Black colored paper and Kraft paper.

People have asked me if using a paper planner has changed my life. Has it made me more organized? Do I get overwhelmed with decorating? How do I find time to use a planner and what types of things do I organize?

I started using my Filofax personal organiser back in May 2012. Has it changed my life? Definitely, in more ways than you can imagine. For sure, I can't see myself with out it now. Without it, I would have a sea full of post-it notes everywhere. I still have a sea of post-it notes, but at least now they are contained in a lovely leather binder. I never intended to be such an inspiration for decorating planner pages.

I simply started this blog, with my first blog post two years ago on this date, to share my creativity and share to the world that using a paper planner can still be a way of life. Finding a better way to stay organized, I found that using this type of planning system has given me an outlet for keeping all the information I need easily accessible and readily available. Decorating was never overwhelming. As a crafter and stationery lover, my planner was the perfect outlet. I knew how to balance things, by not over decorating yet keeping my planner functional. I still use the same layout with a week on two pages in Personal size. I have tried other formats, but this seems to be the one layout that I come back to. It is like a blank canvas for me because I love using all kinds of stamps, stickers, washi tape, etc. It's always important to set time aside for yourself. How can you take are of anything else, if you are disorganized. Having some time to put my thoughts onto paper also helps me unwind from my hectic day. So, every night before I go to bed, I make planner time! When the end of the month rolls around, I really start to focus on the next month. As for how I make time to decorate, if I know I'm going to have a busy month, I will film all my weeks in one day. Most times, I already have some themes in mind for that month, and I already set aside the supplies I will use. It just makes things go a lot faster.

As far as what I use my organiser for, I use multiple ones for different reasons. Some people have a difficult time understanding, how can one person use more than planner at a time. Well, I will share with you my system for planning. This is my system and what I have found to work for me. Some people like to keep things all in one place, I have found the need to have things separated. I feel that I am able to organize each part of my life this way because I can focus on what I need to. I also think that I can find things more easily this way. I am currently using:

My Home Management Binder: A5 Rapsberry Saffiano Filofax
    1) Notes: Work Search Log and other random notes
    2) Monthly: Month on Two Pages used for work schedule/events/ appointments/ special occasions
    3) Filofax: Lists and notes for Filofax related information
    4) Financial: Record tracker of my monetization for blog/YouTube/ other income
    5) Addresses: PenPal tracker and other important contacts relating to my blog.

My Everday Carry (EDC): Personal Purple Finsbury Filofax <--- this changes every month or so
    1) Notes: Personal notes
    2) Lists: Wish lists, bucket lists, need lists, want lists, list of fountain pen inks I own, list of beauty products I own, crating items.
    3) Weekly: Week on Two Pages <--where the bulk of the decorating happens
    4) Monthly: MO2P from Lime Tree Fruits <-- to keep track of my bills
5)Financial: Bank related information, encrypted passwords
    6) Addresses: Filofax/stationery retailers in my area

My Wallet:  Compact Zipped Purple Malden Filofax<--- I stick to a Compact size
I do not keep any inserts in here. It contains 8 credit/business card holders. For a total of 48 rewards cards, stamp cards, loyalty cards, business cards, medical cards. I love using a compact size for two reasons.
    1. My cash can be easy placed into the pockets without having to fold it or put into a separate envelope.
    2. I can see all the cards clearly, finding exactly what I need, when I need it.
My File Folder: Personal Purple Songbird Filofax
Includes: 1-5 tabbed dividers with  A-Z dividers
I use this Filofax to store all my pen, marker, and stamp swatches. If you have read other posts from me, I am constantly testing out pens, markers, stamps, and ink with how they interact with different types of paper (bleed through, no bleed through). I also take time to test out paper for people who like to print their own inserts. So, I needed a place to contain everyone in one place, just for this purpose.
The 1-5 dividers separate blank note paper, cotton cream paper, to do lists in white paper, to do lists in cotton cream paper, lined paper in white and cotton cream.
I categorize the different pens and markers by alphabetical order using the A-Z dividers. For example, and the Pilot pens would be filed under the letter "P". Uni-ball pens would be filed under "U".

My Health/Fitness Journal: A5 Purple Original Filofax
I keep notes for my spiritual and emotional health, as well as physical health. I keep a food journal and keep track of my fitness.

So, now that I have been using my planner for over 2 years now, how to I store or archive pages? By storing them in other organisers, mainly ones that I only keep as part of my collection, not intended for actual day to day use. Currently, I have 2012 and 2013 in one Filofax, and part of 2014, in another. It's like a "blast from the past" experience, to grab a vintage planner and see my past pages. I get to see how my work "decoration" has evolved and it's also like a book of inspiration. Sometimes I see a decoration, and try to make it even better, or use a different technique to re-create the look.

As for the rest of my organisers, I like to switch in and out of them every so often. For example, in the spring time, I like using the lighter colored ones. In the fall, I like using my plums, and wines. This is what I love about using a ring bound planner, is that you can easily switch the binder cover when you want to. I have been asked what is my favorite planner of all. I will tell you my top 5 ranges which is in no specific order or color.
    1. Finchley
    2. Malden
    3. The Original
    4. kikki-K
    5. Baroque
For those of you, who are just getting into paper planning, I hope you will find tons of information on this blog that will help you along the way. For those of you who have been loyal and faithful to my posts, I thank you. I am very grateful for your love and support, through my ups and downs, for reaching out to me with your wonderful messages and inspiring me to keep going when I felt like stopping. I hope that by sharing this information with you, that you are able to find what works and what doesn't work for you. Thank you again for stopping by, and hope you come back soon!

Planner Decorating Essentials - STICKERS & WASHI TAPE

It has been highly requested that I share my decorating essentials for my planner. Although decorating in your planner is not essential to keep yourself organized, these are mainly products that I believe will help many your planner look more pleasing to the eye and create it into something motivational yet very useful. My intention is not that decorating is a must, but demonstrate that you can use your organiser in a creative yet functional and effective manner.

This week I will highlight my favorite products for:

    STICKERS

There are many types of different stickers that I use to for in my planner, some for organization and some for fun. When I want to mark things/events that are reoccurring, bills, appointments, activites I like to create my own stickers.
Using Avery 5418 Labels for Trash, Laundry, Mortgage.

I also like using stickers for color coding. Transparent colored stickers are great for this. Using a transparent colored circle over a date can remind me that something important is on that particular day.

For fun, I love to use Korean Diary Stickers. They add a touch of cuteness with fun facial expressions, and characters. I also use these sticker tabs from Girl of All Work to create monthly tabs.

Masking Stickers are similar to washi tape, I can use them for embellishing my pages, to labeling topics on a page. They are easier to write on than washi tape because they are made out of paper. Other stickers I love to use for decorating are by Sticko and Mrs. Grossman's. You can also create your own tabs for whatever your like as seen below for my travel checklist using Avery Tabs.

    WASHI TAPE

If you don't yet know what washi tape is: read all about it HERE.  Other ways you may have seen it called are: Japanese Masking Tape, Decorative Tape, Paper Tape, Crafting Tape, and Fun Tape. So, what is all this craze about tape? Endless possibilities! Not only can you use them in your planner in various ways, but there are many other uses for them, which include, decorating a frame, to creating a greeting card, spruce up a table, embellish a cell phone case, and many more. You can read about some ideas HERE from my Washi Tape Wednesday posts or just search on Pinterest for more washi tape D.I.Y. projects.

I have mainly used these tapes to decorate my planner inserts. Use it to highlight headings or important words as well. Here are some wonderful tapes from the Recollections brand sold at Michael's Craft stores. Some of my other favorite stores to purchase tape are Jo Ann's Craft Stores, Hobby Lobby, Dollar Tree, Daiso, Staples, and Target.
